Organic SEO For Small Businesses – Part IV

Abstract: A detailed look at this area of search engine optimization focussing on trusted links targeted towards small businesses, organizations and sole traders.

Intended Audience: Small Business Owners/webmasters and anyone new to the world of web design and search engine optimization (SEO) particularly those working with small businesses, organizations and sole traders.

The third article in this series focused on reciprocal linking and we will continue the link theme in this article and take a look at trusted links

What is a trusted link? The term seems to have originated in relation to websites that Google and other search engines consider to be trustworthy such as governmental and educational (particularly universities) websites. The following points need to be considered in relation to trusted links:

• These types of links, while valuable, are difficult to acquire
• Website URLs ending in .gov are only used in the USA
• Website URLs ending in .edu are restricted to accredited postsecondary institutions and are primarily used in USA
• Under no circumstances should you attempt to acquire these types of links, or any other type of link, by surreptitious means.

Given how valuable a trusted link might be to the ranking of your website on Google etc. it is worth investing a little time establishing the feasibility of acquiring this type of link. Many governments around the world provide local support services for small businesses, sole trader etc. and usually a resource website is part of this service. Some of these agencies may be prepared to provide a link to your website; particularly if your business is in start-up phase. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

Another avenue for acquiring trusted links is to establish if you’re local or nearest university or postsecondary institution is seeking any type of sponsorship. Part of any sponsorship could include the provision of a link to your website. While many small businesses may not have the finance to engage in sponsorship activities it should be noted that sponsorship can take many forms such as the provision of services, etc. and may not mean having to part with much needed funds.

It is very important to ascertain if any of your competitors have acquired trusted links as it could be the case that the same trusted links are available to your website. This can de done by going to Yahoo Search and entering the following text:

linkdomain:example.com site:.gov

The above command will display a list of all websites with the domain extension of .gov that link to a website called www.example.com. This command can be used to uncover any trusted links acquired by your competitors. At this point you can contact the “trusted” organizations and establish how you can get a link to your website.

Search Engine Optimization: Natural Linking Strategies

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be the difference between a small, barely profitable or visible website and a traffic magnet website. There are a lot of ways, both good and bad, to influence the search engines. Some search engines react to certain strategies better than others. Some even have conflicting strategies that they react to. To document all of these things would require a significant number of pages and research that goes beyond the scope of this article.

However, there are a number of things that can be documented that will work for most if not all search engines. And let’s face it; there are really only 3 that make a difference between a successful and an unsuccessful SEO strategy. They are the big three: Google, Yahoo and MSN. These three search engines in any given month are responsible for over 90% of all internet searches.

So, what is this article about? It’s about what you can do as a website owner that will influence the search engines using commonly accepted practices of linking to other websites (outbound) and getting website links (inbound) back to you. There are basically 4 strategies that a website owner usually will employ to increase their website value in the eyes of the search engine.

They are reciprocal linking, one-way linking, multi-site linking and directory linking. A website owner should not think that using just a single strategy is the right answer – sure it will help your SEO but it won’t be the Best answer. The Best answer is to employ all 4 techniques and to do it naturally.

Each of the four linking strategies has specific descriptions that can be summed up as:

1. Reciprocal Linking: Site A links to Site B, Site B links back to Site A

2. One-Way Linking: Site B links to Site A

3. Multi-Site Linking: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, Site C links to Site D, and Site D links back to Site A. Could be 3..N number of sites involved.

4. Directory Linking: Site Directory A links to Site A

That seems simple enough but it takes time and effort to perform all 4 strategies and most website owners aren’t willing to spend the time or don’t have the time to spend on it. As a website owner, SEO needs to be one of the highest priority tasks that you need to address, just after Order Processing and Fulfillment and Customer Service. Without free traffic from the search engines, other traffic generation strategies that usually require payment must be engaged.

Now doing the 4 strategies above is great, but it gets even harder because you have to do it in a way that doesn’t trigger the search engines to enforce a penalty upon your website. No one except the search engine engineers know all of the exact penalties but we have some good theories for some of them.

The first is the rate at which links are created. There is a certain threshold for creating links that is too fast. It’s possible that the threshold is a sliding scale and is related to the age of the website according to the engine. For example, a young low-traffic website should not normally be getting 1000 links a month whereas an older website that gets a lot of traffic could be OK to get 1000 links a month. As you progress in your linking strategies make sure you keep this in mind, especially if you are thinking about buying links.

The second is that having a link to every site that links to you will likely reduce the value of the links. In other words, if all you ever get is Reciprocal Linking, you will likely move up the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page’s) but you won’t reach your sites full potential. Having a mixture of all 4 strategies will appear more natural to the engines.

The third is having all inbound links to your site on “linking” pages will make those links less valuable than having a natural link on a contextually relative page for a percentage of the inbound links. The higher you can drive this context percentage, the better your website will rank. These types of links are often some of the most difficult links to generate an exchange for because it requires more time and effort for both website owners.

The fourth is to have links inbound from all different ranking sites. If all you have linking to you is page rank 6 and 7 sites then you are likely to be sending the message that you purchased your links and that is not natural to the engines. Some would argue that purchasing links for driving traffic is just fine and it is. However, you should not expect the search engines to give those inbound links very much weight when calculating your SERP positions. It is significantly more natural for you to have a large number of rank 1 and 2 inbound links and a decreasing number of inbound links as you move up the page rank scale (0 – 10).

The fifth is to have the text of you inbound links varied. It isn’t natural to have every website that links to you to have the same text on the link description. The natural tendency would be to have a certain percent be the sites name, but after that it should be a wide variety of description. Your link text description is a key factor for how your site/page will rank, so make sure that you keep that in mind as you specify your preferred link text description on your website.

Finally, it would be best for a good percentage of your inbound links to appear within the text of a page that appears natural for the reader of that site. And for those links to not all point back to the home page of your website. It’s most natural for a good high quality link to appear in the text of a page and have it point internally within your site.

So, when you begin or continue your SEO activities keep all of these things in mind and don’t be impatient. Impatience could incur penalties or worse. Your website could end up in the “sandbox”. It is rumored and becoming more concrete that Google supposedly uses a sandbox that questionable sites are put in until they have aged to a point that Google no longer feels that they are being manipulated. Many of the search engines use similar protection schemes to eliminate spam sites and manipulation sites to keep their SERP’s from being cluttered.

If you already have a website that uses RSS Feeds, I am sure that you know what they are and assume that you would know that you can use this feed to syndicate your website content all over the internet. However, there is much discussion on how and where to do this effectively and easily. I have a couple of RSS tricks that you can use to get your website information syndicated to all the top rss feed directories quickly and easily, so if you are ready to take your web site promotion to the next level and grow your website exposure over night, keep reading.

Much like article directories like “EzineArticles” and “GoArticles” there are many RSS Feed directories on the internet that are nothing more than a large database of user submitted RSS Feeds. These sites can be a small goldmine to a webmaster or internet marketer if they are used correctly. You can do a google search, locate these sites, sign up for an account and submit your RSS Feed. However we do not think that this is the best way to spend your time promoting your site. In fact we think that this is a pretty serious waste of your time.

If you are using a Word Press blog you already have a build in “Ping List” that would let you list each of the sites

The best way to get your RSS feed submitted to many different sites all at once is to use an RSS Feed Submission service. No these do not cost anything, they are free and easy to use. In most cases you can submit to up to 20-30 RSS Feed directories with a single submission using these free web based applications.

If you are interested in getting your feed submitted quickly have the following information ready:

1. Your Blog Name

2. Your Blog Description

3. Your Blog URL (domain name)

4. Your Blog RSS Feed URL (web site address when viewing your rss

feed) 5. Podcast Information (if you have one)

O.K. now that you have it all together, jot down these search phrases :

“Feed Shark”
“ping-o-matic”
“Pingoat”

Now these 3 services are all very similar and they are all free to use. They do have some different listings and there are some sites that each will submit to that are the same. Many people worry about submitting duplicate content or to the same directories twice. I have never had a problem with this, in most all cases, the second submission is simply rejected and not indexed an additional time.

I will submit my feed to each of these services once, then I will do the same again every time that I add a new post to my website. If you are using a wordpress blog you can have this done automatically for you, when you add a new post.

Almost daily, I see a report about a company or individuals who is trying to fool Google through SEO. When are they going to learn that you just can’t fool Google? Why would you even want to try it, with when you risk being banned from the biggest search engine in the world? Many people seem to try just because they wonder if it could ever be done. As a general rule of thumb: it can’t!

There are some instances in which people think that they have tricked google. They believe that something that they have done has rocketed their site to the top of Google’s listings and they truly believe that they have managed to “stick it to the man.” Nine times out of ten when this happens they either performed an SEO procedure that Google allows or even endorses or they just happened to fill Google’s criteria better than other sites in their category without even realizing it. Once in a while someone will actually come up with a way to fool Goggle. They will be enjoy a nice high spot on google’s listings for maybe even several months, but then the end comes for these proud sites. As soon as Goggle notices that it has been cheated, these sites are removed from the index; sometimes permanently.

Anyone with a real interest in making money from the web should consider that getting banned from the search engines effectively removes your site from the web. This is an excellent form of marketing because it allows you to reach out beyond your market simply by dishing out a few dollars a month.

Some of the most popular methods of trying to fool Google’s PageRank system are link farms and link exchanges. Link farms are basically websites that exist only to get links to specific sites counted by the search engines. Link exchanges are groups of websites that each pay a monthly fee to link to each other – like link farms, only more expensive and dodgy. In both cases, the websites involved are attempting to climb the ranks of Google’s search results through the sheer quantity of links to them –this is known as Googlebombing. But it doesn’t always work.

Goggle knows that cheaters can ruin their search engine for the rest of us. After all, if link farms inflate the rankings of less-useful Websites, then we’ll all start seeing worse search results. That’s why Goggle constantly updates PageRank to keep those kinds of sites away. The Page Rank formula that Goggle implements is mysterious and ever changing. This is the primary reason that Goggle cannot be fooled.

It has been found recently that Goggle is now sending out ‘cloak bots’, disobeying robots.txt to find out whether sites are ‘cloaking’ – serving a different page to search engines than what visitors see. These ‘cloak bots’ are controversial but seem to have some positive effects on the Google’s results.

Unethical methods make it difficult for people who are trying to do SEO the proper way, which is one of the reasons why it needs to be monitored so carefully. If people stopped trying to find ways to manipulate the system, it would be much easier to keep up with what’s going on.

One piece of software any optimizer should love is Firefox. Now some may say “Why Firefox, it’s only a browser?” Yes, it’s a browser, but one that supports a big variety of plugins, some of them very useful for search engine optimization. So let’s see what those plugins are:

1. SEOpen ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/570/ ): this is one of the best and most used Firefox seo plugins, and has many tools that make it a favorite of mine. So let’s see what it can do:

* in Google it can check for: backlinks, indexed pages, related pages, cache and PageRank.
* in Yahoo and MSN: backlinks and indexed pages.
* for Alexa: overview, traffic details, backlinks and related sites.
* keyword density of the most used words on the page.

3. Don’t waste anymore of your precious screen real estate just to find out what your PageRank and AlexaRank is! SearchStatus ( https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/321/ ) can sit anywhere you want (I keep it in the status bar) and you’ll receive the precious info at a glance. But this little tool can do a lot more than that:

* it shows what metatags a site has
* checks for backlinks and indexed pages in Google, Yahoo and MSN
* it shows the robots.txt file
* keyword density report function
* and best of all: the highlight “nofollow” links will show you what links will be followed by search engine spiders — very useful when you want to submit your site to a directory and don’t know if it will matter from a seo perspective.

Google’s New Get Tough Policy Against Misuse Of The Google Local Directory

As the diligent Chief of internet submission company, Submission Company, search engine Submission Company, I am constantly watching the evolution of the Google Maps protocol.
In recent weeks to months it seems that Google has begun taking some drastic measures to curb the use of their gmail service for the dissemination of spam. In recent months, Google has been featuring more and more articles in their local business center, describing new quality control guidelines for submitters. Their thinking may have been that companies using various techniques to feature keywords in their listings, may have been moving ahead of businesses more qualified to provide the services the online shopper was looking for. Google laid down a number of guidelines as to how to fill out individual text fields on their applications, and made it clear that listings not compliant with these new guidelines might be removed from the local listings. Apparently, this trend is only one step in Google’s war against unethical Internet practices.
In a move that is sure to upset many Google Maps users, Google now requires that all new gmail accounts, not coming from a non-gmail email account, must be verified by text message sent to a cell phone. Would be gmail users not in possession of a cell phone are advised to borrow one from a friend. This new system is being called G-mail beta. One wonders how long the test will continue. Google has apologized for this new stringency and explained that the move was needed to curb the use of gmail by spammers who have been using gmail for their email advertising campaigns.
Lately, in a another more drastic move, Google is tightening the belt when it comes to verification of new Google maps accounts. It appears that the Google computer is being programmed to recognize more and more spammy business submissions, right at the start. And these submissions are being flagged, and held for review I decided to add back single keywords to see which ones would be accepted by the Local Business Center, without triggered another flagging. I only added back “emergency mobile locksmith,” and the listing was again flagged. The idea that a listing should be flagged for such an innocuous keyword is extremely consternating. I looked on various discussion boards but couldn’t find anyone else with my experience. Until otherwise proven, I am convinced that Google is cracking down on the locksmith industry, because of spam, and may even be placing a quota on the number of times a keyword can be used in a given geographical area.
As more and more people register on the Google Maps, and as Google creates more and regulations to protect the quality of the local business listings, it is more and more of a challenge to get top listings. Google has created a number of helpful articles and videos for businesses wishing to list their company. But for business owners who do not have time to list themselves, or for owners and professionals alike who are looking for ways to be compliant with Google, and yet successful in getting high ranking on the maps, the additional guidelines create new challenges. I looked on various discussion boards but couldn’t find anyone else with my experience. Until otherwise proven, I am convinced that Google is cracking down on the locksmith industry, because of spam, and may even be placing a quota on the number of times a keyword can be used in a given geographical area.
